1st Meeting Reflection

On our first meeting on our subject “Technopreneurship”, our facilitator introduced himself to us who he is and how he handled this subject for many years. But before I’m going to tell you what I’ve reflected, I’m going to tell you first what did really happened during our class session. We were surprised and shocked when he said that we will be having a quiz. And this is the time where all of us got crazy because we were also thinking about what will be the topic because obviously it is the first time he had met with us and the worst thing is that, I do not have any quiz papers (in this case, it’s a yellow paper) so what I did is I bought a yellow paper on my seatmate, and that costs 10 Pesos. Pretty expensive for a 1 piece of yellow paper isn’t it? Well, that experience gave a lesson to me. In our lives, we should always be ready for the things to come, better or worse, we have to fight for it. Anyways, back to the story. After that, the quiz started, and we are all losing our minds because we don’t really know what questions will be thrown to us. But in all of sudden, we were greatly amazed that the questions are just simple instructions. Like, write your name, write this equation (I forgot about that) and write our expectations from him. So, it is a relief for me, but I kind of freaked out when he said that we should write our names in the left bottom of the paper, fold the paper and find the center and from there, you write the equation and lastly, write the expectations in a justify writing format. Knowing that erasures are not allowed, and I have already written what did he instructed, I didn’t hesitated to buy another piece of yellow paper from my seatmate. So my total expenses for that subject is 20 pesos, and damn it feels so bad because I wasn’t carefully listening for the instructions to follow.
A moment later, he collected our papers and took a look on it. I am glad that I wasn’t only the one that is not following the instructions of our facilitator. We never really knew what our score was because after we checked, he immediately collected the paper for him to read it. Also, one of the questions, we were asked “what are your impressions on me?” and “what are your expectations on me as your technopreneurship facilitator?” My impressions are: He’s pretty experienced in facilitating this subject, he has a lot of technology business ideas that could possibly change the world of technopreneurship and he is a serious type of a person. My expectations are: He will be convinced to what business ideas we pitch in because I have heard from his past students that he is pretty hard to be convinced and it could take about up to 10 presents or even higher than that before he will be convinced, and also I’m expecting that he will going to be convinced by what business ideas we pitch.
After that moment, our facilitator explained what technopreneurship really is, how could you make money out of it and how could it even destroy a friendship (only if that friend of yours is a rival of your company). He also talked about how he handled his students before, how he handled the students for being the representative for the Philippine Startup Challenge, and how the school received many awards from competitions joined by our Seniors before. Sadly, there have been no students from our school got to the competition. I can really see that he was disappointed because “naputol iyang rosaryohan”. And he hoped that one or all of us will be on the competition to win that trophy again.
In the middle of the conversation, he asked us about what are our thoughts if we hear the name our facilitator or what have we heard about him that came from our seniors. All of my classmates gave their thoughts about him. All of us have different thoughts about him and for me, I’ve heard that he doesn’t give a passing grade in the end of semester, instead he would give an incomplete grades to his student. And he agreed that he does that. He even called himself as “Dr. INC”. In order to get a passing grade, we must pitch our idea to a local startup competition, and that would count as a grade in local competition. And finally, compete to the Philippine Startup Challenge and to be a champion and bring home the trophy.
Lastly, he gave us an assignment. To observe a three sectors (Hospitals, Department Stores, Fast Food Chains), look for an existing problem and find a technological business solution for that.
I was kind of nervous when he said that we will compete because knowing that I don’t have the skills to pitch (because I really don’t like speaking in public), then how could I even get a place for being a competitor in the PSC? Well, I think this is where my reflections will come in.
First of all, what is technopreneurship? How does it define itself? What does it take to become a good technopreneurship? Well, technopreneurship is a method or way that is essential on making money and creating jobs out of a technology. It is a technology oriented business which helps the automation of common transactions or etc. Since the today’s technology is getting more advanced than before, a business incorporated with a technology plus the individual skills of a person would be a great source of power in creating a competent business. An innovation in technology starts from an idea, but an idea alone wouldn’t generate an income to a company nor create jobs. Someone must develop it, incubate it, and if everything goes right then you might grow your company which now can generate income and create jobs which will be a big help not just in our city but in the fast developing economy of our country.
As what I’ve experienced in the 1st quiz can be also a lesson, not just a life lesson, could be also applied being a technopreneurship. If you start your own company, you should be always ready for what’s going to happen, take risks properly, plan the future of your company or else, you could lose all your assets just because of a problem that you haven’t prepared for. And being a technopreneur is a hard thing, you have to learn how to give a shot of risks, what can you do to level with your competitors and how to make your company still run after several years of service.
Indeed technology helped and escalated our way of living for the past years. Being an IT with a business minded is a plus and a need in this generation because we are near to the days that we will live with robots, AIs, and tons of automated machines. But despite of that good things happened, there are also downside things to be considered. Job seekers will have a hard time looking for a job because maybe, that job is already machine automated and requires no human intervention for it to work. In contrary, through technologies we will build our lives higher. There are a lot of opportunities that would lead us on the brighter future. Through technopreneurship, a lot of innovations are waiting before us. Innovations which will give our wants within the future and facilitate us to achieve extra money simply. Technopreneurship influence us particularly in business matters. We will use and build income through technologies that being a part of our life these days. We will adapt and contend with different business person within the world of business. Technology helps us learn, socialize, success, then way more.
All in all, I’m hoping that I will learn a lot in this subject. To learn more about creating ideas and crafting it to make it as a solution to the existing problems in our world right now. I’m also aiming to create a solution for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), targeting “No poverty” and “Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions”. I know that the main point of our class in our first meeting was to know first how accurate having technopreneurship in our industry. It is very helpful in the fact that we are facing reality and generating technologies and ideas in the future for the goodness of our economy, industry, country and for the world. And also, I won’t give up, and I will try my best to pitch in front of him and wait for that “yes”, even if it would take many pitching repeats because to be honest, I’m not a business minded person. But for the sake of my grade, I will do whatever it takes to have a place in the PSC.
